What Is THCA?

THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the cannabinoid your flower actually contains before anything happens to it. It's the raw, acidic compound hemp plants produce naturally as they grow — and on its own, it's non-intoxicating. Raw flower sitting in a jar won't get you high; the THCA hasn't converted yet.

When a lab tests raw flower, THCA is usually the largest cannabinoid number on the Certificate of Analysis (COA), often listed separately from Delta-9 THC.

What Is THC?

THC (Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive cannabinoid — the one responsible for the effects people associate with getting high. Flower doesn't start out this way; THC is what THCA becomes once it's exposed to heat.

How THCA Becomes THC: Decarboxylation

The conversion is called decarboxylation — heat strips a carboxyl group (CO2) off the THCA molecule, turning it into active THC. It happens when you smoke, vape, dab, or cook flower into something like edibles. On a lab report, THCA and Delta-9 THC can be reported separately even though heat can convert THCA into Delta-9 THC.

Roughly 87.7% of THCA's mass converts to THC after full decarboxylation — the rest is lost as CO2 gas. That ratio is where "Total THC" calculations on lab reports come from: Total THC = (THCA × 0.877) + Delta-9 THC.

Why This Matters for Federal Hemp Law

Under the federal statutory definition currently in effect, hemp is defined in 7 U.S.C. § 1639o using a Delta-9 THC concentration of not more than 0.3% on a dry-weight basis. Federal hemp production rules also require testing methods that account for the potential conversion of THCA to THC. Congress amended the federal definition in Public Law 119-37, Section 781.
